Hi Patrick, I don't think you'd have any trouble doing the Kepler in two days -- overnighting at Iris Burn. It'll be a hard couple of days (particularly the first, via the Luxmore Hut), but I'm sure you'll find that the suggested times (as given in the track leaflets and on the signs) are way longer than you'll need if you're at all fit. Hope you enjoy it!

I'm planning a trip for March 2012 and your blog is helpful. I'm 42 and a fit marathoner. I'm considering trying to do Kepler is 2 days / 1 night, staying at iris Burn. Am I crazy to do this?

Hi Stephen,
Yep, it's definitely possible to do that in a day (Mt. Luxmore summit from Te Anau, and back). You'll need to be in reasonably good shape though, and make sure you start at a reasonable time to give yourself the full day, but it should be a great day out on the hill.

I think you're looking at around 35km and 1300m ascent, or close to anyway. You could shorten the distance a bit by starting from the Control Gates rather than in Te Anau itself, but that's not essential.

DoC (NZ Department of Conservation) suggest 4 to 6 hours to the Luxmore Hut I think. I was pretty fit when I was there, and managed it in 3 hours without feeling rushed at all, and still walking rather than running. The track is incredibly well made and maintained, so no problems there.

Have fun!

I am thinking of doing this walk, to the first top, there and back in a day from Te Anau. Is this possible?

Hi Sarah,
In my experience (limited to only one season though :-)), March is a good time to be trekking in NZ. What it boils down to is that, even in the summer, it's possible to have bad weather sweep through that'll dump snow on the mountains. Such summer snowfalls are usually very short-lived, and the snow's gone again within a few days on a track like the Kepler. You'd be unlucky to hit these conditions in March, but it's by no means unheard of.

DoC (NZ Department of Conservation) closely monitor the weather forecast and conditions on the managed tracks, and there are wardens at each hut, so you shouldn't find yourself in the midst of a storm unexpectedly. I'm sure you'll love it!

Most excellent.

I just followed your links from the lonely planet post. I'm travelling in March and considering this track after Milford ( I mean, if I'm going to get my butt into fiordland then I best make the best of it), and now I'm considering snow. Which is a little bit of a turn off, since I'm specifically trying to escape the Maine winter. And I'm starting to think I don't know much about mountains...

Hi John,
Good question. It was late February, so well into the southern hemisphere summer really. I've edited the post to include a date now. Is this a track you're thinking of doing?
